Jose Santiago Gonzalez, 89 of Tlaxcocoxcatlán, has no apprentices, his children have left, and his peers have died. He is the last Huastecan flute player. His songs, a mixture of traditional Huastecan rhythms and originals he's written in consort with Jesus and the Virgin Mary, and the method to make his instruments will die with him.

This photo essay, along with vital audio recordings of his songs, was made possible by the combined efforts of the Bronx Documentary Center, Boreal Collective, and the Centro Cultural Tenexcalco.
